If you're planning to have a baby in Michigan, you'll need to do some extra Googling.

The state has received a $10 million grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services to help birthing hospitals pay for "mandatory state Maternal Level of Care (MLC) verifications," the Detroit Free Press reports.

The verifications are designed to make sure hospitals are providing safe, quality care to pregnant women and their babies.

"Michigan has some of the lowest infant and maternal mortality rates in the nation," says Sen.

Debbie Stabenow, who helped secure the grant.

"By verifying that hospitals are providing safe, quality care to pregnant women and their babies, we can reduce the number of infant and maternal deaths in Michigan."

Hospitals that don't comply with the state's verifications will be eligible for up to $50,000 in funding this fiscal year.
