Jennifer McClellan is the first black woman elected to Congress from her home state, and she's also the first black woman to represent it in the House of Representatives.

But that doesn't mean she's above controversy.

In an interview with the Climate Conversation, the Democrat says President Trump's proposed tariffs on goods from countries that don't abide by the Paris climate accord are "not just going to hurt our economy, they're going to hurt our jobs, they're going to hurt our security, they're going to hurt our people," the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

She says Trump's proposed tariffs on aluminum, steel, and aluminum from countries that don't adhere to the Paris climate accord could hurt Virginia's economy by $300 million a year.

McClellan says she wants to make sure that Virginia, which is home to many coal- and oil-fired power plants, is protected from the effects of climate change.

In the interview, she says she wants to make sure that people in her district, which includes Richmond, know they're not alone in facing the effects of climate change.
