Seven N.C. Summer Nutrition Program Sponsors Receive Awards

It's that time of year again: time for the National School Nutrition Association to announce its annual list of the best and worst summer nutrition programs, and North Carolina is among the winners.

The state's Department of Public Instruction handed out seven "Summer Nutrition Champion Awards" last week for programs that went "above and beyond" to provide kids with healthy food during the summer, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.

Among the winners: The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Plain received the Rising Star Award for its educational enrichment programming, such as "Teen Chef" and the creation of edible fruit art snacks.

The Boys & Girls Club of Wake County received the Going the Distance in Innovation Award for its 25 different programs the club offered to kids to encourage healthy eating.

Franklin County Schools and Gaston County Schools received the Farm to Summer Award for their efforts to provide student-favorite meals with fresh and North Carolina-grown items.

The Gaston County School Nutrition Department's Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified school garden has quickly grown in size to become a small farm of 0.6 acres.

Through Summer Nutrition Programs, children were able to eat farm produce grown specifically for them.

The USDA's Turnip the Beet Award is given to "outstanding Summer Nutrition Program sponsors who work
