'Patient-First' Tech Innovations Can Boost Healthcare Access, Tackle Workforce Shortages ...

A new report from the World Economic Forum warns that by the end of the decade, the world could have 10 million fewer health-care workers than it has now.

The report, called "Global Health and Healthcare Strategic Outlook" and released ahead of the WEF's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, says that the world's health-care system is struggling to keep up with technological advances and is facing a shortage of workers that will affect access to care, inequities in treatment of mental health, and the treatment of violence and burnout, CNBC reports.

"We now need to focus on long-term system change to stop health services deteriorating in the face of economic crises," the report's head of health and healthcare, Shyam Bishen, says in a statement.

The report, which looked at case studies from around the world, says that the world's health-care system dropped 25% between 2000 and 2016 as a result of the Covid-19 virus and other pandemics, the BBC reports.

It also warns that a shortage of health-care workers is expected to rise to 10 million by the end of the decade as more people seek treatment outside of hospitals and doctors' offices.
