If you're a fan of Eli Lilly and Company, you've probably heard about the company's work with penicillin, the Salk polio vaccine, and insulin.
But you probably don't know much about Eli Lilly or his grandson, Eli Lilly Jr., either.
The younger Lilly was born in the 1880s and took over the company in the 1930s, while his father, Colonel Eli Lilly, was a Civil War veteran who served as a captain in the 18th Indiana Battery of Light Artillery, Business Insider reports.

Eli Lilly and Company was founded in 1876; Eli Lilly Jr. took over in the 1930s.
