The Alice L. Walton Foundation and the Walton Family Foundation have established a $1 million fund for the LGBTQ advocacy group in Walmart's home state of Arkansas. The Arkansas Community Foundation will be distributed grants from this fund.
The fund is in response to a proposal by the Arkansas legislature to prohibit LGBTQ civil rights in the state, especially the rights of transgender youth and young adults. Among them is a law that prohibits gender-affirming health care interventions for young transgender people. Tom and Olivia Walton said in a joint statement affirming that now is the time to take action, recognizing that LGBTQ Arkansas people are facing increasing challenges and need community-driven solutions.
