Washington D.C.'s Ward 8 Giant grocery store has introduced its Produce Rx program. The program will enable AmeriHealth Caritas patients with chronic conditions who receive "food prescriptions" to secure vouchers for their weekly or bi-weekly food purchases. The program is part of a larger effort east of the Anacostia River in the Mid-Atlantic to reduce the inequity that comes with a food desert.
Seeds of Change, the Mars Food brand that sells organic food and seeds, is awarding $115,000 to spread awareness of and allow more access to healthy food options for residents of Wards 7 and 8.
The grant supports internship roles and in-kind contributions of seeds in addition to funding cooking classes and healthy food demonstrations.
