A set of Silicon Vally billionaires are seeking to usher in grand changes to how research is conducted in academia and how it is perceived by peer researchers, to its workings and its outcome.
Wealthy donors who set up foundations to fund academic researches and bringing its results to market is requesting major changes in how researchers expect how their effort will be utilized, academically and financially. Many researchers are expected to share their research and often the financial rewards as well among all researchers funded under the same foundation.
All this is done to speed up research results by fostering collaboration between researchers, who were traditionally very secluded and rather secretive, guarding their research.
This is very welcome. The attitude of finding answer to big problem and claiming fame and reward for themselves is very last century attitude.
