"Many of our students, they don't understand the importance of a healthy meal or the importance of nutrition," Michael Newton, a chef at Detroit's Lincoln-King High School, tells CBS Detroit.
But that's about to change thanks to a $300,000 grant from the USDA's Healthy Meals initiative.
The Detroit district's Cornerstone Education Group was awarded the money to help develop new or existing meal plans and programs, as well as provide supplies.
"When you have blueberries on a plate a lot of students wouldn't touch it, but now it's in parfait form," Richardson says.
"Students are touching it."
The culinary lab at the high school is already experimenting with new flavors and cooking styles.
"They will eat the foods if we create something that tastes good smells good and looks good, it's not just basic," Richardson says.
