The US Department of Agriculture is giving Haiti $33 million to provide school meals to 75,000 students over the next eight years, Mirage.News reports.
According to a press release, the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program will provide 2,263 metric tons of Haitian-grown commodities, including vegetables, flour, and tubers, as well as 5,610 tons of donated commodities, including rice, beans, lentils, and bulgur.
The United Nations World Food Program will work with Haiti's Ministry of Agriculture to "build the capacity of producers in the Nord and Nord-Est departments, which is a win-win scenario for both the smallholder farmers and students benefiting from the meals," WFP Country Director Jean-Martin Bauer says.
