The Super Mega Ultimate Techathlon is a fundraising campaign that involves eight "ridiculous" challengesincluding a rock-paper-scissors tournament and a stock photo contestfor companies in British Columbia's Okanagan region.
The ultimate goal is to raise funds for a non-profit program called CODEanagan that helps at-risk youth build their tech skills, theKelowna News reports.
According to a United Way press release, one in five children in the area live in poverty.
"But too many young people in our community just don't believe they could get involved," says Helen Jackman, executive director of the United Way.
CODEanagan "blows a hole in that, kick-starting aspiration and equipping them with skills and expert connections."
The program runs after-school and summer programs for 16- to 22-year-olds that focus on audio engineering, video game development, 3-D printing, and more.
"Many of these kids slip through the cracks in traditional education so CODEanagan is designed to ignite imagination and aspiration among a group who may not realize the opportunities available to them right here in the valley," says Jackman.
