Precision Health Program Grad Motivated by Opportunity to Elevate Patient Voice

"I fell in love with patient safety and quality improvement and since then continued to pursue that path."

That's how Consuelo (Coty) Ong describes her path to a master's degree in precision health at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Alberta.

Ong is a senior patient safety specialist with Alberta Health Services, and she's part of the inaugural cohort of the school's Precision Health Program, which is the only one of its kind in Canada focused on precision health, reports the CBC.

The program, which launched in the fall of 2021, is designed for working professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, and Ong was one of the first to take advantage of it.

As part of her degree, Ong is leading a patient safety initiative at Alberta Children's Hospital and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

The project aims to unite and elevate the voices of patients, families, and health-care providers in pediatric hospital settings.

"We were seeing many positive outcomes from our work in safety," says Jennifer Thull-Freedman, a clinical associate professor with the CSM's Department of Pediatrics.

"But we had a sense that our program wasn't reaching families and improving their experience as much as it could."
