Report: Inova Backs Off Plans for Mixed-Use 'Innovation District' on Merrifield Campus

In 2018, Virginia's Inova Health System announced plans to transform the former ExxonMobil headquarters in Merrifield into a "vibrant innovation district with dynamic academic and research spaces, along with supporting retail, hotel, housing, and recreation uses that are open and inviting to the community," the nonprofit said in a press release at the time.

But the Washington Business Journal reports Inova has "no immediate intention" of pursuing the mixed-use development approved by Fairfax County in September.

Instead, the Inova Center for Personalized Health will continue to house medical facilities, such as the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, as well as administrative offices.

"It's not a priority, for sureand never was a priority for meand never was a priority for me," Inova President and CEO Stephen Jones tells the WBJ.

Jones says he doesn't want to get "distracted from the system's health care-related needs, including new hospitals planned in Alexandria and Springfield."
