Gary Campbell and Wchcs'S Big Blue Bus Honored at Ohio'S 2024 Summer Summit

"No child goes hungry during the summer months."

That's the lofty goal of the Big Blue Bus, a school bus that's been delivering meals to kids who wouldn't otherwise get them during the school year in Columbus, Ohio.

The state's Department of Education has recognized the bus as one of three "exemplary initiatives" in the state that have made a "significant impact on addressing food insecurity among children" during summer breaks, reports the Columbus Dispatch.

The Big Blue Bus has been a staple of the Summer Food Service Program at Washington Court House City Schools for five years.

Gary Campbell, the school's food service director, says it's "about nurturing communities, sparking innovation, and inspiring others to take action."

More than half a million free meals have been delivered since the bus and its companion, the Little Blue Truck, started delivering them in 2019.

"This initiative has not only provided essential nutrition to children during the summer months but has also become a symbol of hope and care within the community," Campbell says in a press release.

The Little Blue Truck, meanwhile, has been a "symbol of hope and care within the community," per the release.

The bus will be back on the road in May.
