About 700 million people around the world are undernourished, and climate change is playing a major role in the problem, according to a new report commissioned by the Farm Journal Foundation.
"Today, 700 million people are undernourished," says Farm Journal CEO Tricia Beal.
"As President Biden has said, if parents cannot feed their children, nothing else matters.
We have to act now."
According to the report, extreme weather eventsincluding droughts, floods, wildfires, heat waves, and severe stormshave a "disproportionate effect on low- and middle-income countries where large proportions of the population rely on agriculture."
And climate change is expected to increase demand for food by 50% over the next 25 years, the report says.
"With science, we can reduce the carbon footprint of food systems and design them to be sustainable, resilient, and equitable, while at the same time enhancing food and nutrition security," says CGIAR Executive Managing Director Ismahane Elouafi.
The report calls for increased investments in climate and agriculture research and development, the State Department said in a statement.
