University of Minnesota announces MPact Health Care Innovation vision

"We want these benefits for Minnesota and to serve Minnesotans in ways that only a hospital associated with a leading research university can."

Those are the words of Jakub Tolar, dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School and VP for clinical affairs, in explaining the school's vision for the future of health care in the state.

Under the MPact Health Care Innovation vision, the university would take control of a number of health care facilities on its Twin Cities campus, including the University Medical Center East and West Bank facilities, the Masonic Children's Hospital, the Clinics and Surgery Center, and the clinics and surgery center, the Star Tribune reports.

"We know health care is changing rapidly along with the needs and expectations of patients at home and around the globe," says U of M President Joan Gabel in a press release.

"It just makes sense that we have great hospital facilities in which we can combine all three in the same place."

The vision calls for a new state-of-the-art medical center on the east bank of the Twin Cities campus, as well as the eventual development of a new, world-class medical center on the other side of the campus, the Star Tribune reports.
